spareroom, the UK’s busiest flat and house share websitet
It’s not an agency based rental deal. For many living outside of the capital, it might seem rather odd. It advertises properties with a spare room (hence the name) and nothing else. Surely there can’t be that many spare rooms that this can be a sustainable thing, right? Well, in London there certainly is. The property prices here are absolutely incredible, to the extent that most of us find it almost unmanageable. There are plenty of people living here that are doing so in very limited spaces just because that’s all they can afford. So flat sharing has become a big thing. A service dedicated to that market, to those that just have a room in shared accommodation to rent is one that the city was crying out for and here it is. The question is: does it live up to expectations.
Rather simple, but there isn’t much need for complication. You want to find either a roommate for your flat or somewhere to live. The service connects you. That’s really all there is to it. What they do do however, they do well. It’s surprisingly easy to find both, with decent numbers on both sides. Perhaps even more incredible is the quality of the applicants you seem to get. The basic screening from Spareroom ensures that timewasters are pleasantly rare, and we’ve found few people with bad things to say about their experience using the site.
Very regular, which is vital. There are new listings popping up every minute, so if you’re a busy worker you won’t find that everything that has been snapped up by the time you get home every day. More importantly, we’ve found that people are very swift in updating their listings. The second something has been agreed and the slot has been filled, it’s off the site. There’s no ringing up to find that that property has been done for a few days now. Generally, if it’s still being advertised then you have a good chance of getting it.
Number of Houses
Surprisingly varied. We were rather expecting it to cater to the poorer elements of the city, which isn’t a huge problem but would have made it even more niche. However, there are people at pretty much every price band there. From cheap flat shares on the edge of the city to beautiful apartments in Kensington, it’s amazing to see how much variety that there is on Spareroom. London’s high prices drive everyone to seek financially clever solutions, which is why this site has done so very well for itself.
Ease of Use
It really is as simple as just putting in what you want from a renter then waiting. The calls then trickle in and hey presto! Suddenly you have a pool of potential candidates to choose from. The same goes for those that want to rent. Specify your exact needs and it will find you exactly what you want. The days of trawling through the classifieds, asking friends if they know anyone that might be able to help you, are long gone.
Sparerooms fills the niche beautifully. We’re actually pretty surprised how well they’ve done. It’s quite incredible. They saw a problem and went after it with all guns blazing and it’s easy to say that they’ve emerged victorious. If you’re looking for a flatshare, they really are few better sights to use. One of the more pleasant sites we’ve reviewed in recent times: in fact, we couldn’t find anyone who didn’t appreciate the service that they’d received.
