USPs

A dedicated company that only works in London. The benefits to this are pretty much epitomised in the general argument between chains and independents. On the plus side, they have great knowledge of the city itself and will often come in at a slightly more reasonable rate. Their smaller operation allows them to be more flexible and, arguably, more precise as management is spread less thin. However, the chain of accountability is small: if you have a problem with their branch, there’s no head office to call. You’ll just have to put up with it.

Coverage

Extensive. As a firm that focuses purely on the capital and has no other markets to look into, they simply look into local demand. That means that they easily serve even the more obscure parts of town. If you want to go to the outside of the city, to zone 6 and beyond, then they’re likely to be one of the options you’ll end up considering. Unlike chains that simply set up a little outlet in every major city they can get their hands on, Skyex have a more comprehensive service because this is their only market.

Ease of Use

Decent. The site itself is a bit of an outdated thing, looking like it was built in the mid noughties and handling a little like it as well. When it actually comes to booking though, the process is pretty smooth and that is what ultimately matters. One thing that we do need to note however, is that cash is almost always the preferred payment method, which is something that is becoming increasingly outdated as more and more people choose to pay online in advance. Other services even offer discounts for doing so, and it’s a feature that will become more of an issue as it becomes increasingly expected.

Value

As you might expect, they struggle a little to compete with the biggest firms. That’s understandable, especially when you consider how much of a discount that companies like Hailo are able to generate just through their use of scale. Supporting the independent businesses is often a slightly more expensive option, but it doesn’t mean that you’re not getting good value. With the level of service on offer, we would say that you’re getting a good deal if you choose to go with Skyex, even if it isn’t ultra competitive.

Service

One of the best reasons to go with a smaller company is the human aspect of it. You can talk to the owner, get to know the regular drivers and generally interact more. This is definitely true at Skyex, and we found their service to be rather charming. It made a big difference, and was something that definitely increased their overall appeal. They’re rarely late, and are always keen to ensure that customers are getting to places in the easiest way possible. Minimising stress, instead of increasing profit, seems to be their main aim and that’s a commendable and customer focussed approach that’s sometimes a little lacking in London.

The Verdict

Overall, Skyex seems to offer a reasonably good service that is primarily focussed on the capital. It’s always good to see smaller London centric businesses thriving in what is increasingly become a world dominated by the biggest chains. With that being said, it’s not a service that’s without its faults. It feels good but a little unpolished, a solid choice but certainly not a worldbeater. We have no hesitation  at all in recommending them in this review, but we wouldn’t go out of our way to use the service.
